Fitzroy Community School Normanby Avenue Thornbury Campus

Opens 2014

16 October 2013

Dear School Community,

Next year will see Fitzroy Community School open a Thornbury Campus at what has until now been known as our Creative Space.

This is an exciting development for us.  Actually, exciting does not really do it justice.

Our school, is and has been oversubscribed for many years.  One of the hardest and saddest parts of my job is being unable to find a place for families – a place I know would suit them perfectly, and whose children would thrive in our community. It is a relief that for a few more families, our school will be able to offer the Fitzroy experience – in Thornbury.

I have always felt that one of the key ingredients in the quality of our school is its size. A new campus increases our size, while still keeping the school small. Another pressing issue is having enough places for the children of past students – in that in a few years time, we would have to start denying places to families with long associations with the school, or else become a much larger school.

This dream of another campus has been a long time coming – it has been part of my dreams (plans) for over two decades.  The two halves of the equation (obviously a maths teacher) were a space and a person.  A space is self-evident – in that a school needs a place to operate in.  The Rudd Government Economic Stimulus Package (BER) was a gift here – in that it funded the first stage of our new school. Darebin Councillors Trent McCarthy and Nick Katsis (retired) also deserve a thank-you for their help with planning changes for our site - their support of our school was, and still is, much appreciated.

Having begun thank-yous, there are a few more.  I would like to thank my wife Clotilde for her support for me professionally and for holding the fort when works keeps me from home.  My parents, Faye and Philip, also deserve a big thank-you for not only starting the school and running it for nearly 30 years, but for then handing their baby to me, and letting me set the school's direction free from interference (well, mostly!).  Claire also deserves a huge thank you for her efforts in preparing a tree of documentation (not sure if this collective noun exists) needed to apply for a new campus.  Last but not least, you, the school community, for ongoing support.  It is this that keeps my spirits up, and makes all of the boring and hard parts of the job do-able.

The other half of the equation was the right person – or more precisely – the right family – backed by a strong team of teachers.  Many of you who have been around the school in the last couple of years will know Wayne, Joelle and their boys, Ted, Chester, Charlie and Sebastian.  Wayne and Joelle arrived from Adelaide and fitted straight into our community, and were quickly loved by all of us.  Wayne, Joelle, Clotilde and I engaged in a number of educational discussions, and this solidified my thought that they had what I was looking for in new campus leaders.  Wayne and Joelle both come with rich, diverse educational backgrounds, but even more importantly, they have the Fitzroy spirit.  I am sure that those who know them will agree, and those who do not, well, you will once you get to know them.

The long wait in establishing a second campus reflects my desire that it not be a poor relative of Fitzroy – and this needed the right staff.  I believe that we now have the capacity to run two great schools.  While I feel really excited by our new campus, I also feel a sense of relief... or more simply...just finally!  This said, the long wait was necessary, as it simply reflected my determination that FCS Thornbury not be a pale imitation of FCS Fitzroy; and that FCS Fitzroy not be diminished through being spread too thin.

Wayne and Joelle's older boys, Ted and Chester have now re-joined their friends at Fitzroy, while Charlie and Sebastian will start at Thornbury as they come of school age.

Official business: Martin Dixon, the Minister for Education will open Fitzroy Community School - Thornbury Campus on Friday the 31st January at 9.00am – and we extend an invitation to all to join him in raising the lion.
